10 inch Ramen Story Bowl

The ramen is already in the bowl. You just add the real one.

The Ramen Story Bowl is painted inside with an entire bowl of ramen seen from above. Noodles drawn in hundreds of fine black strokes swirl around the well. On top of them sit halved soft-boiled eggs with golden yolks, crisp tempura shrimp, spiral slices of fish cake, a cluster of shiitake mushrooms with their classic X cut, dumplings and a few fresh green leaves. Empty, it looks like dinner is served. Full, the painting disappears under the real thing and comes back one bite at a time.

Around the wide rim runs the square key pattern found on traditional ramen bowls in noodle shops across Japan and China, drawn by hand in bold black line on the off-white glaze. It frames the bowl the way a good noodle shop frames its counter.

At 10 inches across, with a centre well 13.5 cm wide and 5.5 cm deep, it holds 500ml, a comfortable single serving of ramen, noodle soup, pho, pasta or a hearty salad, with the wide rim keeping the edges clean for chopsticks and spoons.

Every noodle line, egg and shrimp is painted by hand. The strokes swirl differently, the toppings sit in slightly different places, and the rim pattern shifts as the brush moves around. No two bowls are identical, and that is the point.
